San Francisco Appoints Foreign National To Oversee Elections

San Francisco has violated federal law by appointing a foreign national to serve on the city’s election commission.

According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), “Foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in decisions involving election-related activities.”

However, the far-left government of San Francisco has ignored these rules — passing a measure in 2020 that removed the requirement of being a citizen to serve on commissions and city boards. Each of the seven members of the city’s election commission have to be appointed by a different city official, such as the mayor or the district attorney.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Hong Kong immigrant and non-U.S. citizen Kelly Wong to serve on the city’s election commission. Wong is the first noncitizen appointed to the commission and will be allowed to oversee election policies, but she cannot even legally vote in the United States.

Wong, an advocate for immigrant voting rights, gave her victory speech in Chinese — angering many Americans who saw the speech on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Despite the clear violation of federal law, San Francisco officials celebrated Wong’s appointment to the election commission.

“I’m very impressed by her commitment to enfranchising people who rarely vote, to educating people about the voting process, and to bring in noncitizens and get them the tools they need as they become citizens,” Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said.

Wong has expressed hope that her appointment will inspire other immigrants, essentially encouraging them to take positions in government despite the fact that they are still citizens of foreign countries.

“There are always voices inside my head. Like, ‘You can’t do it. You’re not competent. You’re an immigrant. This is not your country.’ That’s not true,” she said, according to KQED. “If I can do it, you can do it.”

Social media users were outraged over the move.

The X account for Asians For Liberty pointed to Wong’s LinkedIn, which states that she has “devoted my career to championing immigrant rights and equity and inclusion.”

“Wong is the foreign national from Hong Kong without U.S. voting rights who was recently appointed to the San Francisco Elections Commission. Besides listing herself as Elections Commissioner for City and County of S.F., she is currently working at Chinese for Affirmative Action,” the group noted.

“Chinese citizen gives speech in CHINESE after being elected to serve in San Francisco’s Election Commission. Kelly Wong has been sworn in despite FEC rules banning foreigners from taking part in the electoral process at local, state and federal level,” wrote author and commentator Oli London.

“Imagine that people who don’t want to integrate by doing the least and learn the national language will be deciding on the future of an American city. Insanity,” wrote the popular X account End Wokeness.

“Kelly Wong is a CHINESE non-citizen with ZERO allegiance to our country. Yet somehow she has been elected to San Francisco’s ELECTION COMMISSION. The FEC clearly states: ‘Foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in decisions involving election-related activities.’ Whatever side of the aisle you vote from, you should be as outraged as I am. Because Joe Biden Democrats are only ‘building America back better’ for non-Americans,” wrote political strategist Joey Meugniot.

“This will never make sense. Simply despicable. Exactly what you would expect from San Francisco,” wrote author and Bill Clinton accuser Juanita Broaddrick.
