Rep. Luna Advocates For Pre-Debate Drug Tests, Citing Concerns Over Biden’s Mental Capacity

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has joined the growing chorus of Republicans calling for mandatory drug tests prior to the upcoming presidential debates between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Luna emphasized the need for such measures, particularly given the president’s ability to launch nuclear weapons. “We’re talking about someone who has the ability to launch nukes,” she said. “We need to ensure that this individual is essentially capable of not just leading this country, but he can make those tough decisions.”

The push for drug testing comes as Trump, 77, and Biden, 81, have agreed to participate in two debates — one in June and another in September. Trump recently accused Biden of being “high as a kite” during his State of the Union address and vowed to demand a drug test before their first debate.

Many Americans have long questioned Biden’s mental acuity, pointing to frequent gaffes, moments of confusion and other potential signs of cognitive decline. A March Associated Press poll found that approximately 60% of Americans lack confidence in Biden’s mental state, a significant increase from the roughly 50% who felt that way in January 2022.

Luna also cited Republicans’ efforts to obtain audio recordings from special counsel Robert Hur’s interview with Biden, stating, “Frankly, I’m not trying to be funny here, we don’t necessarily trust that he can do that right now.” The White House has invoked executive privilege to prevent access to these recordings.

Other Republicans, such as Rep. Greg Murphy, (R-NC), a licensed medical doctor, have suggested that Biden may have used drugs to enhance his performance during important public appearances. “I was in the State of the Union address and Joe Biden must have been jacked up on something that day,” Murphy said last week.

When asked about the issue, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. declined to take a stance on the matter, instead offering a vague political statement about the importance of presidential debates to democracy.
