On March 19, handgun manufacturer Glock was sued by the city of Chicago over claims the company is liable due to what is known as a “Glock switch” that can allegedly be “easily” used to convert the semiautomatic pistols into fully-automatic weapons. 

The Mike Bloomberg-affiliated organization Everytown for Gun Safety partnered with Chicago in the lawsuit.

A statement from the Chicago mayor’s office asserts “reports that law enforcement personnel in Chicago have recovered over 1,100 Glocks that have been converted into illegal machine guns in the last two years alone in connection with a wide variety of crimes, including homicides, aggravated assaults, batteries, kidnappings, burglaries, home invasions, carjackings, and attempted robberies.”

According to the statement, the lawsuit “alleges that selling a weapon that can be so easily converted to an illegal machine gun and failing to take reasonable steps to prevent or mitigate the problem is an unfair business practice, is negligent, and creates, maintains, and contributes to a public nuisance.”

Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson had this to say about the suit: 

“The City of Chicago is encountering a deadly new frontier in the gun violence plaguing our communities because of the increase of fully automatic Glocks on our streets,” Johnson claimed.

“Selling firearms that can so easily be converted into automatic weapons makes heinous acts even more deadly,” Johnson continued, “so we are doing everything we can in collaboration with others committed to ending gun violence to hold Glock accountable for putting profits over public safety.” 

The lawsuit is the first that has been filed under Illinois’s Firearms Industry Responsibility Act which was signed into law in 2023 by then Illinois Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Although Chicago and Everytown nod to China as one of the main sources in supplying a key component of a “Glock switch” called an “auto sear,” they fail to indicate the degree to which China is allegedly determined to saturate the United States with such devices.

In author Peter Schweizer’s book “Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans,” it is shown how Chinese companies are pouring auto sear switches into the United States with Glock switches so handguns can be made into machine guns. 

The devices are illegal for most gun owners but are allegedly being shipped in boxes by the “thousands” from China to the U.S.
