Biden Vows New Assault Weapons Ban
President Joe Biden declared this week that he would get a new ban on many common firearms come “hell or high water.”
The president’s statements are met with serious doubts that he will be able to get the bill through both houses of Congress. Furthermore, the debate over a renewed Assault Weapons Ban increased scrutiny on the rise of crime during the Biden White House.
Furthermore, the president is unlikely to get the support of enough votes to pass in either chamber. The House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans and senators including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) are less likely to vote for the proposed measure.
The president declared that he would get the renewed assault weapons ban through Congress. The effort follows Biden’s original 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, which restricted ownership of a number of semi-automatic weapons.
Manchin indicated last year that he was open to a ban on some types of firearms. Sinema stated that she would likely not support such a ban, especially if it meant overriding the 60-vote threshold of the filibuster. Manchin stated opposition to changing the filibuster last year.
Without the votes to override the filibuster, the proposed new ban is unlikely to make it anywhere without the support of Senate Republicans, which appears unlikely.

The 1994 Assault Weapons ban had a ten-year sunset clause and was not renewed by former President George W. Bush in 2004.
The president claimed that the 1994 bill caused a sharp decline in deaths caused by guns. However, crime rates began dropping prior to the ban, and other Western nations saw a similar drop in crime during the same period.
The call for the ban on various types of guns also comes during a surge in crime under the Biden administration. This includes almost 80% of Americans who perceive the sharp increase in violent and property crime.
The Biden move also comes after efforts to use the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to restrict the ability of legal gun owners to sell firearms.
