Trump’s Tough Immigration Stance Spurs Self-Deportation

Illegal immigrants in Mexico are choosing to self-deport ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office. Mexican officials have reported that up to 100 individuals have requested voluntary return to their home countries, citing Trump’s plans to crack down on illegal immigration as a primary reason.

These migrants are either financing their travel back home or relying on state assistance to leave. Their concerns stem from Trump’s promise to dismantle policies perceived as lenient, such as the “CBP One” app, which allows migrants to apply for asylum online without going through immigration courts. Critics argue the app has enabled large-scale abuse of the asylum system.

The incoming administration also plans to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, a program that kept asylum seekers in Mexico while their applications were processed. This policy, first implemented during Trump’s initial term, significantly reduced illegal crossings and helped restore order at the border.

Migrants currently in Mexico express fear and frustration over the uncertainty. “I am traumatized,” one illegal said. “If I don’t get the appointment, I will go back.”

In addition to tightening border policies, the Trump administration plans to take aggressive action against the cartels facilitating human smuggling. Tom Homan, tapped as the next Border Czar, highlighted the administration’s focus. “Cartels have killed more Americans than every terrorist group combined. Trump is determined to treat them as terrorist organizations and deploy special operations forces to dismantle them,” he said.

With Trump’s return to office fast approaching, his promises of stronger immigration enforcement are already influencing the behavior of those seeking to enter the U.S., leading many to abandon their plans altogether.
