Trump Demands Action On Mysterious Drone Sightings Across The US
President-elect Donald Trump on Friday demanded a stronger response to reports of unexplained drone sightings, calling for the drones to be shot down if the government cannot identify their source.
“Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge,” Trump posted. “I [don’t] think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, [shoot] them down!”
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security recently issued a joint statement regarding sightings in New Jersey, claiming there is no evidence of a national security or public safety threat tied to the reports. They suggested many sightings are manned aircraft operating lawfully, though they acknowledged gaps in oversight.
Law enforcement has found no evidence of malicious activity but continues to investigate reports. “The reported sightings highlight the insufficiency of current authorities,” the agencies admitted.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted temporary flight restrictions in New Jersey, including areas near Trump’s golf club in Bedminster. These restrictions were recently extended to December 20 as investigations continue. The FAA stated that unsafe drone operations could lead to severe penalties, including fines of up to $75,000.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that President Biden has tasked his team with looking into the sightings but expressed caution about Trump’s suggestion to shoot down drones. Kirby noted safety risks, such as potential harm to people or property. “We just don’t know enough to take those kinds of actions,” he said.
With sightings continuing to raise alarm, both public safety and national security remain at the center of ongoing discussions about how to address unauthorized drone activity.
