Trump Blocks Federal Funding For Schools Enforcing COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates

President Donald Trump has taken a decisive step to protect personal freedom, signing an executive order Friday that cuts off federal funding for any school or university still enforcing COVID-19 vaccine mandates. The move fulfills a key promise to voters, ensuring that students will not be coerced into receiving a vaccine that has faced growing skepticism.

The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services, led by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, and the Secretary of Education to identify any institutions imposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates and to strip them of discretionary federal funds. Schools and colleges that refuse to comply will be at risk of losing financial support from the federal government.

“Given the incredibly low risk of serious COVID-19 illness for children and young adults, threatening to shut them out of an education is an intolerable infringement on personal freedom,” the executive order states. Trump made it clear that taxpayer dollars should not be used to support institutions that disregard individual medical choice.

While the number of schools enforcing these mandates has declined significantly, some colleges have continued requiring the vaccine, at least for students living on campus. As recently as December 2024, No College Mandates, a group opposing vaccine requirements, reported that 15 institutions still had some form of COVID-19 vaccine rule in place.

This order follows Trump’s earlier action in January, which called the military’s former vaccine mandate “unfair, overbroad, and completely unnecessary.” That executive order opened the door for reinstating service members who had been discharged solely for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.

Democrats have predictably opposed the measure, with Sen. Patty Murray criticizing it as “unethical.” However, Trump’s executive order delivers on his campaign promise and reaffirms his commitment to defending Americans against government overreach.
