Trudeau Government To Strengthen Border Security After Trump Meeting
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising stronger border enforcement after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. The discussions focused on illegal immigration, drug trafficking and border security, areas where Trump has demanded action from both Canada and Mexico.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who attended the meeting, confirmed plans for Canada to enhance its border resources. He told CBC that “in the coming days or weeks” the government would roll out additional measures, including drones, helicopters and increased staffing at the border.
Trump has made his stance on border control clear, posting on Truth Social that he will impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico if border enforcement is not strengthened. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump wrote.
LeBlanc described the meeting as productive and cordial. He also met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, to address trade and border issues. Both sides emphasized the importance of cooperation to resolve these concerns.
Trudeau’s government is expected to make visible changes to its approach. LeBlanc indicated the new measures aim to address US concerns while ensuring Canada’s border remains secure.
Trump described the meeting as “very productive” and commended Trudeau for his commitment to combating drug trafficking and illegal immigration. These moves may ease tensions as Trump prepares to take office in January.
