Speaker Mike Johnson Faces Backlash For Praising Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has come under fire from his Republican colleagues for commending House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in a recent interview with Politico. Johnson called Jeffries a “good man” and emphasized their shared values despite their political differences.

The Republican speaker, who has faced criticism for pushing a massive billion-dollar Ukraine aid bill, found Jeffries “refreshing” and believed that the Democrat was “shooting straight.” Johnson appreciated Jeffries’ honesty and trustworthiness, saying, “Trust is a rare commodity around here.”

Johnson narrowly avoided losing his speakership this week after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) forced a vote to oust him. However, a group of Democrats refused to support Greene’s resolution saving Johnson’s gavel.

The speaker has been accused of bowing down to the Democratic Party in recent weeks. A recent Economist/YouGov poll found that Johnson’s popularity among Democrats is increasing while Republicans’ support for him diminishes.

Twenty-six percent of respondents approved of Johnson’s job performance, while 35 percent expressed dissatisfaction with his tenure as Speaker. Johnson’s current negative rating is six points higher than it had been in December.
