Mystery Drones Over New Jersey Prompt Federal Assistance Request
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is asking for federal help to investigate a surge in mysterious drone sightings across the state. Despite assurances that the drones pose no apparent threat, the lack of concrete answers has frustrated both officials and residents.
On Monday, Murphy addressed the issue, revealing that state and federal agencies, including Homeland Security and the FBI, have been involved but remain uncertain about the drones’ origins or purpose. “We don’t see any concern to public safety,” Murphy said, though he acknowledged the absence of more detailed information has been “really frustrating.”
The unexplained sightings have been concentrated along the Raritan River, with as many as 49 reports in a single evening. Some sightings may be overlapping or mistaken, but the consistent activity has left authorities searching for explanations.
The FBI’s Newark division and state police have asked the public to report any relevant details. In a recent statement, the FBI noted reports of drones and possibly a fixed-wing aircraft in the area, with sightings dating back several weeks.
The technological advancements in drones add to the concern. Drones have proven effective in modern warfare for surveillance and targeted attacks. Their small size, maneuverability, and affordability make them difficult to detect and track. New Jersey is home to pharmaceutical and medical device facilities, raising questions about whether the drones are conducting surveillance or represent industrial espionage.
Murphy’s call for federal assistance underscores the urgency of the situation. While no immediate danger has been identified, the mystery surrounding the drones highlights vulnerabilities in monitoring and responding to aerial intrusions.
