FBI Director Kash Patel Investigates Comey-Era Spying Allegations

New leadership at the FBI is reviewing explosive claims that former Director James Comey personally oversaw an effort to infiltrate Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign with undercover operatives. FBI Director Kash Patel has reportedly ordered an internal probe into the allegations, which were first disclosed by a whistleblower to the House Judiciary Committee last year.

According to the whistleblower’s testimony, Comey approved the use of two female undercover agents — referred to as “honeypots” — to secretly embed themselves within Trump’s campaign. These agents were tasked with gaining access to key figures in the campaign, including adviser George Papadopoulos. The operation, reportedly launched in 2015, was said to be off-the-books and directed at the highest levels of FBI leadership.

The investigation was allegedly cut short after concerns arose that the undercover agents’ identities would be exposed. A media outlet had reportedly obtained a photograph of one of the operatives, leading to fears that the operation could become public.

Patel, who was confirmed as FBI director last week, previously served as a lead investigator in congressional efforts to expose FBI abuses related to surveillance of Trump’s campaign. Now at the helm of the bureau, he has committed to cleaning house and ensuring that the agency operates without political bias.

While Patel had stated during his confirmation hearings that he had no intention of targeting past officials, the whistleblower’s testimony has pushed the FBI to take a closer look at the Comey-era actions. Patel has reportedly directed agents to track down those involved in the operation and determine whether laws or internal FBI policies were violated.

The FBI has not issued an official response regarding the ongoing investigation. However, the probe is expected to focus on whether Comey’s reported actions were lawful or constituted an abuse of power. Patel’s efforts signal a shift within the bureau, as his leadership team seeks to bring accountability to past FBI operations.
