Anthony Fauci Granted Taxpayer-Funded Security Worth $15 Million

Dr. Anthony Fauci was provided $15 million in taxpayer-funded security for two years following his retirement, according to documents obtained by Open the Books. The arrangement included a U.S. Marshals Service security detail and a publicly funded chauffeur.

The agreement between the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Marshals Service outlined a comprehensive security package. It covered transportation, equipment, and personnel salaries to protect Fauci, who faced ongoing threats from extremist groups following his role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci retired as the highest-paid federal employee in 2022, earning $480,654 per year. He now collects an estimated annual pension of $355,000. The MOU obtained by Open the Books revealed that the security arrangement could be renewed, raising concerns about the ongoing use of taxpayer funds.

Critics have questioned the appropriateness of using the U.S. Marshals Service for this purpose, as the agency is primarily responsible for apprehending fugitives and protecting witnesses. They argue this arrangement represents a questionable allocation of resources.

Since retiring, Fauci has remained in the public eye. He authored a memoir and holds a professorship at Georgetown University, though reports indicate he has yet to teach a class. Fauci also continued to draw attention for his statements regarding the origins of COVID-19, admitting to Congress that the lab leak theory could not be ruled out.

The cost of the security detail has sparked debate over government spending, with some questioning whether the protection provided to Fauci was justified by the threats he faced.
