Nantucket residents are grappling with the aftermath of an offshore wind turbine blade breakage that has led to debris washing up on their beaches, prompting environmental and safety concerns. The incident has also resulted in the federal shutdown of the wind farm responsible.

Vineyard Wind reported an “offshore incident” on July 13, in which one of their turbine blades was damaged. “The blade experienced a breakage approximately 20 meters out from the root,” said spokesman Craig Gilvarg. Despite the majority of the blade remaining attached to the turbine, debris started appearing on the south shore of Nantucket a few days later.

Residents found pieces of green and white foam and larger fiberglass shards scattered along the beaches, prompting local authorities to close the waters to swimmers. “The water is closed to swimming on all south shore beaches, due to large floating debris and sharp fiberglass shards,” stated Nantucket Harbormaster Sheila Lucey. She urged beachgoers to wear footwear to avoid injuries from the debris.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement responded by shutting down Vineyard Wind’s offshore turbines. The company has since deployed recovery teams to clean up the debris and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure safety around the damaged turbine.

Vineyard Wind committed to a swift and safe recovery effort, but the situation escalated when additional debris was reported, raising concerns about the stability of the remaining blade. The company acknowledged an “observed compromise” to the blade, indicating it could detach soon.

Local fishermen have expressed alarm over the potential environmental impact. One lobsterman highlighted the toxicity of fiberglass, noting that breathing in the fumes during bonding could be harmful. He warned that such incidents could threaten the local fishing industry and his livelihood.
