President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday ensuring that schools or universities that continue requiring COVID-19 vaccinations will no longer receive federal funding. The decision is part of his administration’s continued push to eliminate vaccine mandates and restore medical freedom.

The order instructs the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education to identify noncompliant institutions and develop a system to revoke their federal grants. Schools enforcing vaccine mandates will no longer receive financial assistance from the federal government.

While most schools and universities have abandoned their mandates, some have refused to back down, particularly private colleges requiring the vaccine for students living on campus. As of December 2024, No College Mandates reported that at least 15 universities were still enforcing some form of COVID-19 vaccination requirement.

Trump’s latest action follows his previous executive order reversing the military’s vaccine mandate, which had forced service members to choose between taking the shot or being discharged. His administration declared that policy an unfair burden and made reinstatement available for those affected.

Democrats have predictably criticized the new order, with Sen. Patty Murray calling it “reckless.” However, Trump has been clear that no institution enforcing a COVID-19 vaccine mandate should receive federal dollars.
