Trump Delivers On Promise To Declassify Assassination Files Of JFK, RFK, MLK

Fulfilling a major campaign pledge, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday to release the remaining classified files connected to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The move is intended to provide long-awaited transparency and answer lingering questions surrounding the high-profile cases.

Trump signed the order in the Oval Office, telling reporters, “A lot of people have waited for this for decades.” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, was given the signing pen by the president after the announcement.

Despite previous releases of JFK-related documents, millions of Americans have questioned why the government continued to withhold critical information. The National Archives reports that 97% of the assassination records were made available in 2022, but the remaining classified documents have been the subject of widespread speculation.

During his first term, Trump had promised to release all JFK records but ultimately deferred to requests from intelligence agencies to keep certain documents under wraps. In his new executive order, Trump declared that further withholding of assassination-related files is “not consistent with the public interest.”

The executive order also covers files related to Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, which under current laws were not scheduled to be released until 2027. The King family has requested an opportunity to review the documents before they are made available to the public.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) welcomed the announcement, calling it a victory for government accountability. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that the public gains access to information that has been hidden for far too long.
