Psaki Calls For GOP To Change Convention Agenda After Trump Attack
Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki has urged the Republican National Committee to rethink its planned programming for the upcoming convention following the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump. Appearing on “Meet the Press” Sunday, Psaki laughably stressed the need to de-escalate political rhetoric and promote civility in the aftermath of the violent incident, ignoring the Biden administration’s rhetoric’s responsibility, along with Democrats in politics and the media, for the incident itself.
Psaki made her deceptive push, saying, “I’m incredibly scared. I’m scared for journalists. I’m scared for people who have public platforms of all parties.” She advocated for the GOP to adjust its convention schedule, which begins Monday, to help restore a sense of calm and civility. “The convention is starting and unless the programming changes, the rhetoric and how the programming is set up is not actually calming the tone or restoring civility,” Psaki warned.
The Republican National Convention is set to proceed with enhanced security measures, where Trump will be officially nominated as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate. Psaki argued that without changes, the convention’s current setup might contribute to further political discord. “We’ll see if that programming changes, but if it stays the same, that is escalating it. It is not a civil approach to a convention,” she said.
She also criticized the politicization of the assassination attempt, stating, “For anyone out there who has a platform who thinks the moment right now is to be political and attack the other party — you are feeding into the danger. You are making it more likely there’s retaliation.”
The assassination attempt occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from western Pennsylvania, shot at Trump from a rooftop 130 yards away. Crooks, a registered Republican, injured Trump in the ear, killed one rally attendee, and critically wounded two others before being killed by law enforcement.
Despite the attack, Trump remains resolute, posting on Truth Social, “I truly love our country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”
Psaki’s call for a more civil discourse at the Republican National Convention reflects a broader concern about the current political climate. As the nation contends with the aftermath of the attack, the upcoming convention is seen as an opportunity for the GOP to set a tone of unity and respect, potentially helping to bridge the deep political divides.
