Pentagon Revokes Milley’s Security Clearance As National Security Risks Addressed

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the immediate revocation of retired Gen. Mark Milley’s security clearance and personal security detail, ensuring that the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs no longer has access to classified materials. Milley, who has been accused of undermining military authority, will also face a review to determine whether he should be demoted in retirement.

The Pentagon confirmed Tuesday that Milley’s clearance has been revoked and that his security detail—assigned after threats from Iran—has been removed. The decision comes as part of a larger effort to restore order within the Department of Defense under President Donald Trump.

Hegseth has also directed the acting Inspector General to conduct a review into Milley’s actions while in office, particularly regarding disruptions to the military chain of command. If sufficient evidence is found, Milley could lose a star in retirement, a rare but significant action that would reflect the severity of his conduct.

Additionally, the Pentagon will be removing Milley’s last remaining portrait from its walls. A previous portrait was already taken down on Inauguration Day, signaling a clear break from his legacy. The second portrait, which honors his time as Army chief of staff, is scheduled to be taken down next, ensuring that Milley’s presence is erased from military leadership halls.

Milley’s continued access to classified information had raised concerns, particularly given past incidents that disrupted civilian-military relations. His retention of a security clearance under the previous administration was seen as a potential security risk, making its revocation a necessary step to protect military operations.

While Milley was pardoned by President Joe Biden before leaving office, questions remain about whether further legal action could be pursued. For now, the removal of his clearance and security detail ensures that sensitive military information is kept out of the hands of a retired general whose judgment has been widely criticized.
