Moreno Introduces Bill To Keep Foreign Flags Out Of Congress

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has taken steps to ensure that only the American flag is displayed on U.S. Capitol grounds, introducing legislation that would prohibit foreign flags from being flown inside Congress. The move comes after Ukrainian flags were prominently displayed by Democrats during President Donald Trump’s recent address.

The “Allegiance Act” would make it illegal for members of Congress to use taxpayer money to purchase foreign flags and would ban their display in any official capacity. Moreno, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Colombia, has been outspoken about the need to focus on American interests rather than foreign entanglements.

Moreno, who has been one of Trump’s staunchest allies in the Senate, criticized the use of Ukrainian flags as political theater. “We have Democrats bringing the flags of other countries into the chamber, and it’s a disgrace,” he said. “We should be uniting as Americans around our own flag, not making a show about a foreign land most Ohioans can’t even find on a map.”

His bill comes after a dramatic confrontation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. Zelensky, whose term expired last year but who remains in power under martial law, was ejected from the White House after berating Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The fallout from the meeting led to the suspension of military aid and intelligence-sharing between the U.S. and Ukraine.

Moreno has quickly become one of Trump’s most loyal backers in Congress, championing the administration’s nominees and policy agenda. He argues that foreign aid should not take priority when many Americans are struggling economically.

The bill is expected to be met with opposition from Democrats, but Moreno and other Republican senators believe it is necessary to reinforce that elected officials serve the American people, not foreign governments.
