Mike Pence Joins Establishment Effort To Block Kennedy

Mike Pence is facing growing criticism from conservatives for leading an effort to derail President Donald Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Pence’s political group, Advancing American Freedom (AAF), is lobbying Republican senators to oppose Kennedy’s confirmation, citing concerns over his past abortion stances.
AAF’s letter to senators, signed by President Tim Chapman and Chairman Marc Short, claims Kennedy’s previous pro-choice positions disqualify him from leading HHS. The letter questions Kennedy’s commitment to pro-life policies, despite his promises to support Trump’s pro-life agenda. Pence’s move has frustrated many conservatives who see this as a betrayal of Trump’s leadership.
Kennedy has taken steps to reassure Republican lawmakers. He met with Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and pledged to bring back Trump-era pro-life policies, including the Mexico City policy, which restricts funding for international abortion services. Kennedy also promised to cut taxpayer funding for domestic abortion providers and protect religious freedom.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) has backed Kennedy, saying the nominee committed to following Trump’s pro-life agenda at HHS. Mullin emphasized that Kennedy’s personal beliefs are secondary to his duty to implement the president’s policies.
Pence’s actions have sparked backlash from conservative voices who believe he is siding with the political establishment against Trump. Critics argue that Pence’s interference undermines the pro-life progress made during Trump’s first term and threatens party unity.
With Democrats already opposing Kennedy’s nomination, Pence’s campaign could sway critical GOP votes. The outcome of Kennedy’s confirmation will reveal whether Republicans will rally behind Trump’s agenda or allow internal divisions to block progress.
