GOP Lawmakers Seek To Repeal FACE Act Amid Claims Of Political Targeting

Republican lawmakers, led by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, are renewing efforts to repeal the FACE Act, a law they argue has been used to unfairly target pro-life activists. The bill, introduced with the support of 25 GOP cosponsors, aims to end what they describe as the political weaponization of federal law.

The FACE Act, signed into law in 1994, was intended to prevent the obstruction of abortion clinics. However, Roy and other Republicans say it has been selectively enforced under President Joe Biden to prosecute pro-life individuals for peaceful demonstrations, while pro-abortion extremists have largely avoided similar scrutiny.

Roy highlighted data showing that 97% of prosecutions under the law targeted pro-life advocates over the past three decades. Under the Biden administration, 55 of the 60 cases pursued were against those who opposed abortion, while only five focused on pro-abortion activists.

The GOP-controlled House and Senate, along with President Donald Trump’s backing, have increased the chances of repealing the law. Roy urged fellow Republicans to act swiftly, stating that Congress has a duty to eliminate laws that have been used against pro-lifers.

The repeal effort has drawn support from conservative advocacy groups such as CatholicVote and Students for Life Action, who argue that the law violates constitutional rights and discriminates against pro-life viewpoints.

Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is expected to introduce a similar bill in the Senate, signaling a coordinated push to dismantle the FACE Act and prevent future administrations from using it against pro-life Americans.
