Federal Agents Order NYPD To Preserve Files Amid Investigation Into Commissioner’s Brother’s Nightclub Dealings
Federal authorities have issued an evidence preservation order to the NYPD as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption involving Police Commissioner Edward Caban’s twin brother, James Caban.
The probe is focused on allegations that James Caban used his “nightlife consultancy company” to offer nightclub owners protection in exchange for hiring his security services.
The federal order was delivered to the NYPD’s legal bureau, and police sources say investigators believe the department’s electronic files may contain evidence of corruption.
The investigation is being led by the Southern District of New York, which has also been looking into campaign donations to Mayor Eric Adams’ 2021 campaign.
In addition to raiding the homes of Edward and James Caban, federal agents have subpoenaed the phones of several high-ranking NYPD officers. The IRS is also involved in the investigation, looking into potential financial transactions between James Caban’s company and the nightclubs.
The NYPD has acknowledged the investigation and pledged full cooperation with federal authorities. However, there are growing concerns within the department, with some fearing that the stress of the investigation could have serious mental health consequences for officers.
