FBI Agent Dismissed After Refusing To Push Anti-Extremism Agenda
A former FBI agent says his career ended after rejecting demands to target what he viewed as politically driven cases of extremism. Zach Schoffstall, previously stationed in the Salt Lake City Division, claims he was pressured to carry out actions that aligned with the Biden administration’s focus on domestic terrorism and hate crimes.
In 2022, the FBI arrested members of the Patriot Front at a Pride event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The event, which included controversial performers and organizers, sparked public outrage. Schoffstall alleged that while the group’s views were unpopular, there was no evidence they planned violence. He refused to execute a federal search warrant, citing insufficient grounds, which he says led to accusations that he embarrassed the bureau.
After declining to comply, Schoffstall was reassigned to a different division and ultimately dismissed in 2024. He believes his stance cost him his career, stating that political priorities overshadowed investigative integrity. The case was reassigned to another agent with connections to LGBTQ advocacy, fueling concerns about potential biases in handling the matter.
Schoffstall also shared his frustration over how hate crime cases were handled. He said he brought two cases to U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit involving racially motivated assaults, but both were declined. Instead, Hurwit focused on events promoting awareness of hate crimes rather than prosecuting specific incidents.
The DOJ launched its “United Against Hate” initiative in 2022, aiming to address extremism and hate crimes through partnerships and public outreach. However, critics argue the program often prioritizes appearances over substantive action. Schoffstall believes this approach reflects the administration’s broader focus on optics rather than enforcement.
The Patriot Front case resulted in minimal penalties for those involved, leaving questions about the DOJ’s priorities. Schoffstall’s dismissal highlights concerns about the politicization of federal agencies and their commitment to unbiased law enforcement.
