Elderly Trump Supporter In Critical Condition After ATV Attack in Michigan

An 80-year-old man in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is fighting for his life after an ATV driver allegedly ran him over while he was putting up a President Donald Trump campaign sign. The incident occurred in Hancock, a small city at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula, and police believe the attack may have been politically motivated.

On Sunday, authorities received reports of three separate attacks in Hancock, with all incidents likely involving the same suspect. The first two incidents involved vandalism of vehicles. One car had its tire valves broken off, while the other had all its windows smashed out, according to Hancock Police Chief Tami Sleeman.

However, the most serious incident involved the elderly man who was attempting to reinstall Trump signs in his front yard along the 1400 block of Anthony Street. The signs had reportedly been pulled down earlier by the ATV driver. Around 5:45 p.m., while the man was working on the signs, the driver returned and allegedly struck him with the vehicle.

The victim was quickly transported to UP Health System hospital in Portage, where he remains in critical condition with a possible brain bleed. “We’re not sure what could happen. Could he die from these injuries? Possible,” Chief Sleeman remarked.

Police believe the ATV driver targeted supporters of Trump and law enforcement, indicating a political motive behind the attacks. On Monday, authorities identified a suspect after receiving a call from someone wanting to “confess a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours” and requesting a ride.

When Hancock police and the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the address provided by the caller, they found a 22-year-old male suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators discovered the four-wheeler used in the attack at the suspect’s residence and confiscated electronic devices for forensic analysis.

The suspect’s name has not been released, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities have assured the public that there is no further threat.
