Dutch Justice Minister Says ‘Indications Of Crime’ In Deadly Hague Explosion
An explosion that partially destroyed a residential building in The Hague on Saturday, killing at least five people and injuring four others, may have been the result of a criminal act, Dutch authorities revealed. Justice Minister David van Weel stated there are “indications for a crime” but stopped short of providing specific details as investigations continue.
The explosion, which occurred in the early morning hours, triggered smaller blasts that caused significant damage to the complex in the Tarwekamp neighborhood. Search and recovery operations are still underway to locate potential survivors or additional victims beneath the rubble. Authorities have not confirmed how many people remain unaccounted for.
Speaking to the press, van Weel acknowledged that multiple scenarios are being investigated, including the possibility of an accident. “The police are investigating multiple scenarios, including the scenario of a crime,” he said. Public broadcaster NOS reported that law enforcement is pursuing all leads, including tips about a vehicle seen fleeing the scene shortly after the blast.
Police spokeswoman Anne-Marie Sluys emphasized the broad scope of the investigation. “It can be a crime, but also an accident,” she said, adding that forensic teams are actively searching for clues. A 20-member Large-Scale Investigation Team has been formed under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office to oversee the case.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof visited the site and met with victims’ families. Expressing condolences, Schoof said, “Heartbreaking that there are multiple fatalities, injuries and missing people to mourn. I sympathize with all family members, friends, acquaintances and neighbors.”
Schoof also praised emergency responders for their efforts in rescuing victims and providing aid to displaced residents. Many homes in the area were declared uninhabitable, leaving families without shelter or possessions. “Terrible,” Schoof remarked, urging authorities to bring clarity to the situation as soon as possible.
As the investigation continues, authorities have called on the public to share any information that might shed light on the explosion’s cause, vowing to pursue justice if foul play is confirmed.
