DNC Funneled Millions To Lawfare Efforts Targeting Trump, Records Show

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has channeled millions of dollars to law firms involved in a concerted legal campaign against former President Donald Trump, as revealed by Federal Election Commission (FEC) records reviewed by the Daily Caller. Since August 2021, the DNC has paid nearly $2 million to Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP for “legal services.” This firm’s founding partner, Roberta A. Kaplan, represented E. Jean Carroll in her lawsuits against Trump for sexual assault and defamation.

Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP, established to promote principles of equity and justice, had not received payments from the DNC before August 2021, around the time Carroll initiated her lawsuits against Trump in 2019. Partner Joshua Matz also served as counsel during Trump’s impeachment trials, reinforcing the firm’s deep involvement in high-profile legal battles against the former president.

In addition to Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP, the DNC has paid millions to Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP since 2021. This firm, known for its longstanding relationship with the DNC, has actively participated in legal actions against Trump, filing numerous amicus briefs in the United States v. Donald Trump case. Prominent figures from WilmerHale, including Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, have transitioned into significant roles within the Biden administration.

Mike Davis, a legal adviser to Trump, criticized the DNC’s financial support of these firms, alleging that it constitutes “unprecedented lawfare and election interference.” He contended that the payments are part of a deliberate effort to undermine Trump’s political standing.

The DNC has previously denied using grassroots donations to cover legal expenses. In April, spokesperson Alex Floyd stated that “the DNC does not spend a single penny of grassroots donors’ money on legal bills.” This assertion came after it was revealed that donor funds were used to pay for President Joe Biden’s legal expenses during Special Counsel Robert Hur’s investigation.

The DNC has not provided a response to inquiries about the payments to Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. The revelations underscore ongoing concerns about the transparency of the DNC’s financial practices and its involvement in high-stakes legal disputes affecting key political figures.
