Cornel West Will Be On Virginia Ballot After State Reversal
Independent candidate Cornel West and his running mate, Melina Abdullah, will appear on Virginia’s presidential ballot after the state’s Department of Elections reversed an earlier decision to disqualify him. The department had initially blocked West from the ballot over issues with required forms, but after further review, officials allowed his campaign to proceed.
The problem, according to West’s campaign, was related to new rules that went into effect after the campaign had submitted some documents. The Virginia Department of Elections acknowledged the issue in a letter to the campaign, saying they had reconsidered their decision.
This victory in Virginia follows West’s success in Michigan, where he fought a legal battle to get his name on the ballot. A Michigan judge ruled that the state erred in disqualifying him due to technical issues with his petition. West’s legal victories could help propel his campaign in the remaining months before the election.
Virginia, while not a battleground state, has seen tighter polling in the current presidential race than expected. According to RealClearPolitics, Vice President Kamala Harris holds a narrow lead over President Donald Trump, polling at 48% to Trump’s 44%. When independent candidates like West are added to the mix, Harris’ lead drops to 44%, with Trump polling at 40.5% and West earning 1%.
West’s inclusion on the ballot may shift dynamics in Virginia, though it remains to be seen how much of an impact he’ll have in November.
