Chip Roy Predicts GOP Resistance To Trump’s Policies

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has raised alarms about the potential for Republican lawmakers to quietly obstruct President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda. Speaking on Todd Starnes’ show, Roy suggested some GOP members are preparing excuses to avoid fully embracing Trump’s policies.

Roy warned of what he called a two-faced approach by some within the party. “They’re going to give lip service to backing the president’s agenda while stonewalling it behind the scenes,” he said. “This is the natural way of things for Republicans in Washington.”

Citing examples, Roy noted resistance to Trump’s proposed immigration reforms, including broad deportation efforts. He labeled such opposition as an unwillingness to disrupt the status quo and called for a more assertive approach to enacting Trump’s priorities.

Roy also criticized the recent passage of the Social Security Fairness Act, arguing it reflects the party’s failure to address fiscal responsibility. The bipartisan bill, which reallocates Social Security funds to benefit public sector workers, comes with a nearly $200 billion price tag over a decade. “They’re bankrupting programs with these kinds of decisions,” Roy said.
Roy expressed hope for a faction of Republicans ready to advance Trump’s policies but warned of significant internal opposition. “There’s a large block here who want to do it,” he said. “But some people in this conference are in for a rude awakening.”

He also took aim at taxpayer funding for NPR, arguing that private businesses should not have to compete with government-funded entities. Roy voiced support for proposals to eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as part of broader federal reforms.

With Trump set to take office in January, Roy’s comments underscore the challenges within the GOP to unify behind a transformative agenda, as well as the broader debate over fiscal priorities in Washington.
