Archbishop Vigano Exposes Financial Motives Behind Clerics’ Immigration Stance

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has sharply criticized Catholic leaders who oppose stricter immigration enforcement, alleging that their objections stem from financial interests rather than doctrinal principles. Vigano responded to Cardinal Robert McElroy, who recently stated that mass deportations conflict with Catholic teachings.

Vigano countered, asserting that deportation policies align with natural law and a state’s responsibility to protect its citizens. He accused Catholic organizations of leveraging taxpayer-funded resettlement programs for financial gain, stating, “Stopping illegal immigration would make them lose an inexhaustible source of profit, paid for by citizens’ taxes.”

Organizations like Catholic Charities USA reportedly received $1.4 billion in government funding as of 2023, significantly more than from private donations. Critics, including Sheena Rodriguez of the Alliance for a Safe Texas, claim the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops pushed for nearly $30 billion in immigration-related appropriations for 2024, tying the Church’s stance to its funding streams.

Vigano further warned that unchecked migration serves broader globalist agendas, including population replacement. He linked Catholic leaders’ advocacy to the “deep church” and its alignment with “subversive globalist lobbies.” He called out McElroy for focusing on political agendas like immigration and climate change rather than spiritual duties.

McElroy, recently installed as Archbishop of Washington, has drawn attention for his progressive positions, including support for LGBTQ inclusion and women’s ordination. His approach, praised by some, has also raised concerns about its alignment with Catholic doctrine.

Critics also highlight McElroy’s record on addressing clergy sexual abuse, pointing to his handling of allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. McElroy’s appointment follows contentious debates about leadership in the Washington Archdiocese, which has faced scandals over abuse cover-ups.

This controversy underscores divisions within the Church over its role in addressing immigration and broader societal issues, as financial and doctrinal priorities clash.
