Anderson Cooper Questions Polls Showing Kamala Harris Leading, Cites Past Mistakes
CNN anchor Anderson Cooper recently voiced his skepticism about polls showing Vice President Kamala Harris ahead in the 2024 presidential race, pointing to previous underestimations of President Donald Trump’s support in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. Cooper expressed his doubts during an appearance on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” where he openly questioned whether the polls can be trusted this time around.
“I report on them, I think they are interesting to talk about, and look at,” Cooper said. “But in truth, deep down inside, I don’t think I buy them.” His comments come as Harris enjoys a polling surge, largely due to her nomination as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate following President Biden’s decision to step aside from the race in July.
Harris has seen her net favorability rating rise from -14 points when she entered the race in July to a +1 rating by mid-September, according to CNN. In contrast, Trump’s favorability stands at -9 points, though his historical polling trends have many analysts urging caution in interpreting these numbers.
Nate Silver, one of the country’s most respected election analysts, also reminded voters to take current polls with a grain of salt. “In both the last two general elections they underestimated Trump,” Silver noted, urging people to remain aware that there are still several months left in the race and that unexpected developments could still occur.
Despite Harris’ current polling advantage, Cooper’s skepticism and Silver’s caution serve as reminders that, in recent elections, the polls have not always painted an accurate picture, particularly when it comes to Trump’s base of support.
