158 Democrats Oppose Bill Targeting Criminal Immigrants Convicted Of Sex Crimes

The House of Representatives voted on the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, a bill aimed at deporting illegal immigrants convicted of sex-related crimes, exposing sharp divisions in Congress. While the measure passed 266-158 with bipartisan support, 158 Democrats voted against it, drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers.

The legislation, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), seeks to deport individuals in the country illegally who have been convicted of sexual offenses, conspiracy to commit such crimes, or domestic violence. Mace described the bill as a necessary step to protect women and children, saying, “If you vote against it, you’re sexist against women.”

Despite this framing, most Democrats rejected the measure, calling it divisive and accusing Republicans of weaponizing crime for political purposes. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) argued the bill was rooted in fear rather than meaningful reform, claiming, “This is another partisan attempt to scapegoat immigrants.”

Mace’s motivations have also faced skepticism. Known for having distanced herself from Trump over January 6, she reportedly sought attention during the protests by suggesting she confront rioters for publicity. Despite reported attempts to gain notoriety grandstanding against Trump over that day, Mace has since aligned herself with him, creating skepticism about her intentions.

Among Democrats supporting the bill were Reps. Mary Peltola (D-AK) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), signaling some bipartisan concern over crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Slotkin, who is running for Senate, joined other Democrats in backing the legislation despite opposition from her party’s progressive wing.

The GOP has prioritized immigration enforcement, with previous efforts such as the Laken Riley Act targeting violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
